As a Jewish girl growing up in the United States, the Holocaust was an extremely large part of my World War II history education. In both religious school and public school, World War II became synonymous with the horrible atrocities and mass murders committed by the German Nazi party against minorities, mainly the Jewish people.

Adolf Hitler of the Nazi party came into power as Chancellor of Germany in early 1933 and almost immediately began incorporating his anti-Semitic ideologies into German law. In the late 1930s, the Nazi German military, known as the SS began placing minorities, including Jews in concentration camps to separate them from the rest of German society. Auschwitz, known today as the largest and most brutal of all Nazi concentration camps, opened in Poland in May 1940. In its early years, Auschwitz was used as a holding camp for political prisoners and prisoners of war. Nobody, not even Hitler himself, nor his main assistant Himmler would have predicted that Auschwitz would swell into the largest site of mass murder in world history. Between 1940 and 1945, the Nazis expanded Auschwitz to a second site, Auschwitz-Birkenau, complete with two massive crematoriums used for the gassing and burning of the bodies of more than two and a half million Jewish people from all over Europe.

For nearly three years, approximately 1942-1945, Jews and minorities from throughout Europe were transported by train to the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Upon arrival, those who Nazi doctors and physicians decided were “fit to work” were separated from those who were considered useless to the Nazi German state. The people classified as “unfit to work”, including mostly women and children were almost immediately stripped of their personal belongings, including clothing and even hair, and then sent directly to the gas chambers where they were murdered by gassing, cremated, and essentially disposed of entirely. Almost 65 years later, the site of these murders leaves behind and eerie feeling and leaves visitors of Auschwitz with a general state of uneasiness.

While living in Barcelona, Spain for four months, I felt it necessary to take the short trip to Poland to visit this important site in world history. Being Jewish, I not only feel a connection to the Holocaust itself, but also take great interest in World War II history and the crimes committed by the German Nazi military party.

Today, almost the entire Auschwitz concentration camp remains standing, open to the public as a museum dedicated to the memory of the horrible tragedy that occurred there and in the memory of the victims who were killed. People from all over the world travel to Poland to the site of Auschwitz to learn, connect, remember, and pray about what has occurred so recently in history.

In today´s society, viral marketing is arguably the most successful form of advertising. With the expansion of the internet, social networking is also expanding. According to studies, the average person has a close circle of 10-12 friends and family. The internet is a useful tool for companies that allows people to quickly contact these friends and family to discuss a product, which can be considered the most successful form of free advertising. These people are also not necessarily evangelist customers. In the case of an evangelist customer, people could often contact their entire extended group of friends and family, which can include more more than 100 people. Social networking makes this extremely easy and possible. For example, individuals can dedicate their personal MySpace or Facebook page to supporting a specific product: anything from a band to a company to an athletic team. Six important forms of viral marketing include “send it forward”, viral, masked marketing, rumor marketing, social database, and invitations for a product. All are considered successful ways to take advantage of the internet and social networking in order to obtain free advertising. “Send it forward” allows companies to send out mass emails that encourage customers to forward the emails and information on to their friends and family. In my opinion, the only people who will definitely participate in this form of viral marketing are those who are loyal to the company and feel strongly about the products. Rumor marketing is extremely successful. When rumor or current news is posted and spread about a certain person or product, people are often very interested in remaining up to date on the latest details, and therefore, they become more invested in all aspects of the information, including the latest promoted product.

The internet is constantly changing the future of politics. In the United States, democratic candidate Barack Obama embraced this idea in preparing for the November 2008 elections. He realized that the best way to raise campaign money was through many small contributions, most of less than $200. The best way to spread Obama´s message through the nation, especially young people is through social networking on the internet, which quickly became a form of free advertising for Obama´s campaign. People who received these messages on the internet then made small donations to Obama´s campaign. In most elections, a significant amount of money recieved from campaign contributions is spent on advertising. Through the internet and social netowrking, Obama essentially recieved free adversiting and was therefore able to spend money raised for his campaign on other elements such as traveling, researching, and public appearances. Barack Obama, in 2008, proved that the furture of elections and campaigning is on the internet through social networking and the spreading of information, esentially a form of free advertising that is more likely than any other advertising to reach large numbers of public voters.

I know my way around the Barcelona Metro system; I know what to order in restaurants, and I know basically how to communicate. What I still haven’t gotten the hang of is how to keep up with sports in the United States. I wake up every morning and read the ESPN headlines online, but for some reason, even with short Sports Center video clips, I still feel disconnected and uninformed. With March Madness, also known as the NCAA basketball tournament quickly approaching, I am apprehensive about keeping up with the tournament on CBS beginning on “Selection Sunday” in less than two weeks.

Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and similar social networking websites are becoming more and more popular around the world. The advantages of these websites seem endless, but there are serious dangers that are often overlooked by the naive “social networker”. While privacy settings are meant to keep one’s personal webpage private, with the right technological knowledge anything on the internet is accessible. Therefore, anyone from stalkers to employers can access your personal information if you are posting it online.

Exposure of sexual predators on the internet is prevalent in news media and even television shows like, “To Catch a Predator”. Young people are the main demographic that fall into a risk category for these predators. According to a CBS news report, adults who pose as teenagers online target young teenagers who are willing to post their personal information online. According to CBS, “When kids think MySpace, they think other teenagers. They don’t think there are adults pretending to be teenagers on there”. Furthermore, the article goes on to explain that The Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported more than 2,600 incidents last year of adults using the Internet to entice children. So maybe these young people should start thinking more about who could be looking at their information.

Parents can do a lot to keep their children safe online by setting up firewalls and website blockers. More important, however, is talking with them and educating them of the dangers online and how easily they can be exploited. Even still, some children will ignore the warnings and put themselves at risk for dangerous situations. Today’s generation of young people are much more internet and technologically advanced than their parents. Hence, firewalls and internet blocking can often only do so much to prevents exposure to internet dangers.

I am constantly surprised by the information that my young cousins in middle school and high school post online. As if it’s not enough that 12, 13, and 14 year olds have Facebook, they are posting the time and place of their next activity. Websites like Twitter make stalking even easier. The up-to-date information of a minor’s whereabouts at any given moment can be accessed with the click of mouse.

One of the scariest stories I’ve heard involved a teenage girl who posted a picture of her soccer team. A 40 year old man, who had already once been convicted of sexual assault involving a minor, through knowing the soccer team’s name found her soccer team’s schedule, and attended games regularly, and finally acted on his obsession, and proceeded to kidnap one of the players. Luckily, she was eventually found. Many others are not as fortunate.

As stated before, the advantages of social networking on the internet more often than not outweigh the disadvantages, but the dangers that exist are serious, and need to be taken seriously by anyone exposing personal information online.

In class, Pipo defined digital storytelling as a combination of text, video, audio, pictures, graphics, and interactivity as an activity presented on a website. It also allows feedback from people who subscribe to the website. Although many digital stories are created simply for entertainment purposes, digital storytelling is an extremely influential way for the public to be educated and informed about causes worldwide. The original version of “digital storytelling” was done on television by the BBC about individual people living in Wales. As technology moved away from television and into the internet, digital storytelling became more prevalent in the effort to spread information about worthwhile causes and draw attention to certain important world events. Media convergence is not only seen in digital storytelling, but also throughout the internet. For example, my father works as a sports radio broadcaster in the Washington, D.C. area. Originally the broadcasts could only be heard in places where the radio waves would reach and people could get the radio signal. With the expansion of the internet, the same radio show can now not only be heard through the AM radio waves, but also seen and heard through a podcast over the internet. Similarly, some radio stations will also have a live video stream over the internet, and a transcription of what is being spoken about. Hence, media convergence is prevalent throughout the internet in digital storytelling as well as most current websites.

Due to the development of modern technology, most specifically the internet, citizen journalism has developed as a source of information, possibly even more prevalent than professional journalism. Because there is no regulation of self-publications on the internet, there is no guarantee of factual information and no exclusivity in what is considered by the public to be “journalism”. I distinguish professional journalism from citizen journalism as information that is regulated and held to a certain standard by the company of the publication. Regulation is the most important aspect in the debate over citizen versus professional journalism. Therefore, in my opinion, any self-publication, whether done by a professional or an amateur would be considered citizen journalism regardless of payment. Hence, a “journalist” can be both professional and citizen depending on what type of publication is developed. Unlike doctors who are required to go to medical school and lawyers who require law school and passage of a professional bar exam, journalists do not have professional regulation to ensure qualification in the “profession”. Therefore, to determine quality journalism and draw conclusions about media and information, it is extremely important for the public to be able to distinguish professional journalism from citizen journalism.

At the University of Wisconsin, I minor in history with a specific interest in Germany and World War II. Therefore, when I came abroad to Europe for the semester, I knew Berlin was an important trip to make. My six closest Wisconsin friends (three of whom are here in Barcelona with me, and three of whom are studying in Rome) knew how important this trip was for me and made the decision to come along for the ride. Whether they regret the decision or not, they were in for a seriously educational and intensely filled tourist experience. We arrived at our hostel, St. Christopher´s on Thursday night. After reuniting with the Rome freinds, I went to bed prepared for a long day of German history on Friday. Due to the cold, I excepted to be the only one of the group of seven to go on the walking tour, but by some miracle all seven dwarfs made it out of bed and ready to face the city by 10:30 am. We began at the Brandenburg Gate, a famous German lankmark that was slightly on the side of East Berlin during the Cold War. The gate survived World War I, World War II, and the Cold War, and has been in the process of restoration since 1990. In the same square as the Brandenburg Gate are the United States and French embassies. Also, across from the Gate is the famous Hotel Adlon that was once used by Hitler and the Nazi party´s most important guests. Today, the hotel is famous for guests like Michael Jackson and newly elected US President Obama. Along the way, the tour guide explained a lot of famous stories and details about German history, most of which I already knew, yet still found extremely interesting while actually being in the extremely historical city. Next, we saw the Reichstag building that was erected in 1894 as the site of the German parliment through the era of the Weimar Republic. The building was set on fire on February 27, 1933, less than a month after Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany. Although many conspiracy theories and speculations regarding the arsonist´s identity exist, the most commonly believed is that a Communist party associate named Marinus van der Lubbe was guilty of the crime. Therefore, Hitler portrayed the event as Nazi propaganda that the Communists were against the German government to create hatred toward the party.

Risk Management is a relative term. This weekend in Interlaken, Switzerland I managed to take a lot of risks. Between skydiving, night sledding, and skiing, I managed to survive a hostel potentially contaminated with bed bugs and a series of potential transportation catastrophies. Sleeping has never really been my thing, so since my flight left Barcelona at basically the crack of dawn on Thursday morning, I decided against trying to sleep Wednesday night. So when I heard Becca´s alarm go off I jumped out of bed in a fit of joy and screamed Switzerland with crazy excitement. So before I get all involved in my weekend in Switzerland, I should probably explain that I never take myself too seriously, and pride myself on having little shame regarding any of my adventures. Anyway, skydiving is now officially my new favorite activity, however at about $500 a shot, I think it might put a serious dent in my budget. Jumping out of a helicopter was actually by far one of the most exciting things I’ve ever experienced in my life. Plummeting to the earth at 120 miles per hour is a pretty intense experience, and in those 45 seconds before the parachute goes out, you really ponder the most important things in life, like “if I die, I can’t believe I’m going to be wearing an orange jumpsuit that makes me look like an escaped fugitive“. Anyway, needless to say, the parachute worked, but my crash landing was certainly not a perfect 10. I missed the part where they said legs out straight when you hit the ground, so in my spread eagle position, I was able to plow together a huge pile of snow. Oh well, I’m still alive. After some serious celebration drinking, my friends and I all went night sledding, which is actually a lot more dangerous than it sounds. You’re basically placing your life in the hands of a plastic sled and the glowstick of the person in front of you. Luckily, we all made it out alive. The next day a day of skiing the Swiss Alps was definitely necessary. I hadn’t skied in almost two years, but they say it’s like riding a bike. Interestingly enough, the last time I rode a bike, I almost got hit by a car, so that really can’t be a good sign. But they were right. Once I clicked into the rental (by far the best rentals I’ve ever had) skis, I was on my way to an olympic gold. Definitely the best weekend of my life…which is why the rest of the story is totally worthwhile. I failed to mention that traveling from Barcelona to Interlaken is no easy task. We had to take a flight from Barcelona to Geneva, and then two trains from Geneva to Interlaken. Now, on the way back, our flight from Geneva to Barcelona was scheduled for 7 am. So getting from Interlaken to Geneva clearly needed to be done the night before, and on no sleep. So of course we decide to take the last train of the evening. When that train was delayed a half an hour, we were clearly going to miss our connection train. HA HA! This is where it gets interesting. So then we figured out a way to finally take 3 trains to Geneva. Genius travelers, I know. Side note: On the second train, we were harassed by a drunk homeless man, no big deal. So whatever, we finally arrive and check into a hotel in Geneva from 3 am to 5 am. Most expensive nap of my life. So happy to be back in Barcelona. Final side note: Didn’t shower once in Switzerland, once again, no big deal. Overall, unbelievable weekend. Love Switzerland.
